How does CBD interact with the skin?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a natural compound found in the cannabis plant with a rich history connected to medicine going back thousands of years. CBD is a natural substance that's used in products, for example edible products, tinctures, bath, and body products which contribute to a relaxing and calmer mind and body. Therapeutically CBD has extensive antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
CDB has a truly powerful arsenal of therapeutic properties, being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antipsychotic, anti-anxiety, analgesic, antidepressant, and neuroprotective natural plant compound. Many of these properties happen to be immensely helpful for skincare conditions including aging, dehydration, dullness, blotchiness, acne, psoriasis, eczema, excessive pigmentation. It is no wonder that this 100% natural wonder is achieving superstar status in the beauty and skincare world – especially when you combine it with other bewitching botanical ingredients.
CBD can be absorbed by our skin, topically it does not enter the bloodstream but connects with nearby cannabinoid receptors thus stimulating our endocannabinoid system. When applied to the skin, the ECS plays a huge role in maintaining well-balanced, healthy skin and cannabinoids (such as CBD) offers support to that process like nothing else.
The endocannabinoid system (abbreviated as ECS) is described as ‘a central component of the health and healing of every human and almost every animal’. This vast grid has the capacity to influence functions in the brain including memory, mood, pain response, appetite, perception, cognition, sleep, emotions, motor function and anti-inflammatory function as well as brain development and protection. The ECS is omnipresent in the body – in the skin, the brain, major organs, connective tissue, glands, immune cells, etc and it works tirelessly to maintain the body’s internal balance and physical wellbeing. It creates an internal equilibrium, harmony and peace which resists even the most hostile fluctuations in the external environment. This state is known as homeostasis (from two Greek word which mean ‘standing still’).
So, what happens when CBD is applied topically? How does our skin respond?
Our skin is waterproof but, contradictory though it sounds, it is also selectively permeable, allowing some fat-soluble substances to pass through its outer layer, the epidermis. Applying CBD oil/salve to the skin is most efficacious when consistently applied directly to areas of chronic inflammation or pain, and if combined synergistically with other botanicals and essential oils to increase permeability. This is one of the wonderful attributes of our Dreem Distillery philosophy – the art of marrying CBD with complimentary essential oils to not only enhance skin penetration but to also give you the benefit of aromatic therapeutic essential oils.
Our BED BALM includes 1200mg of broad-spectrum CBD, making this product the perfect treatment to rub into aches and pains. Carefully mixed with the finest botanicals, one being Arnica, the balm allows you to relax letting the CBD reach the endocannabinoid system and visibly repair everyday damage to the body.
