Summer Skin Care Tips
The sun isn’t the only thing glowing this season – we all know winter can be super rough on your skin, but did you know summer can be, too? It can, but for entirely different reasons. Breakouts, sunburn, clogged pores, you name it. Longer hours of daylight and hot, dry, or humid weather can affect our skin differently than the colder and darker days of winter.
Hello, easy-breezy summer skin care. Follow these beauty tips and tricks to keep your skin glowing all season long, and enjoy the sunshine with skin health in mind:
Apply sunscreen often
It’s essential to apply sunscreen daily to reduce your risk of skin cancer, no matter the weather. Look for sunscreen that’s broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and reapply every 2 hours, and don’t forget about your lips too!
Stay in the shade
All experts recommend we wear sun-protective clothing, wide-brim hats, and sunglasses in the sun. We don’t expect you to wear a long-sleeve shirt for a hot day at the beach but be mindful to expose as little of your body as possible to direct sunlight. That might mean sitting underneath an umbrella, wearing an extra-large hat, or avoiding the midday sun.
Lighten up your moisturiser
You’re probably already slathering SPF like crazy, or wearing things like tanning lotions, so now is the perfect time to use a lighter daily moisturise. To help lighten things up, you could consider switching to a combination moisturiser and sunscreen during the summer. Thicker moisturisers can lead to clogged pores, inflammation, and acne; especially if you have acne-prone or oily skin, losing one skin-care step with a combination moisturiser/SPF can help keep skin clear. Thanks to its lightweight texture, it will help keep that outer layer nourished without feeling too heavy on your skin.
That extra layer of sweat on your face does not count as a moisturiser. Even if your skin already feels oily, you should always follow cleansing with a moisturiser. Moisturisers re-establish the stratum corneum, your outermost layer of the skin, which protects from harmful pollutants and chemicals and prevents further irritation or dryness.
Go lighter on the makeup
On warmer days, wearing a ton of makeup can feel like an unnecessary extra layer. And, if you sweat, your makeup will come off more easily. Embrace the season and pare down your makeup routine. Your skin will enjoy the break. Wearing less makeup lets the skin breathe. It’s like how sleeping without socks lets your feet breathe. Makeup can also be clogging.
Don’t over shower
You may find yourself rinsing off more often during the summer, but did you know it can actually make your skin dryer instead? With more time outside comes more dirt and grime, especially if you’re going to a pool, beach, or public place. Your pores can get clogged from all the activity, so consistently washing your body helps to prevent a build-up of grossness. Your body makes natural moisturising factors that hold water in the skin, and when you wash those away, the top of the skin can be dehydrated. So just be sure to stay aware of how your skin feels. To avoid that and stay hydrated, try our Into the Deep bath oil. Made with anti-inflammatory patchouli oil and chamomile oil to encourage blood and lymph circulation, this bath oil not only calms an overactive mind, but helps harmonise and balance. The addition of organic sunflower oil disperses throughout the bath, providing skin and senses a luxuriously soft, hydrated finish.
Stick to showering once per day and after exercise if needed. Rinse your face with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water in the morning and at night to avoid drying out the skin. You can also wash with lukewarm water after sweat sessions. If you find yourself sweating, try using blotting papers.
Exfoliate once a week
Nothing’s better than a summer body scrub, except maybe the fantastic weather. With all of the outdoor activity your skin goes through, from relaxing by the pool to hiking your favourite trail, exfoliation will help keep your skin clean, fresh, and soft. Our Z’s bath salts are full of muscle-relaxing Epsom and Himalayan salts, hydrating vitamin E and plenty of fragrance. Expertly blended with broad-spectrum CBD, calming juniper berry and detoxifying lemongrass essential oils. You can use the salts to scrub a section of your body in a circular motion for 30 seconds and let your mind wander to a relaxing paradise.
*DREEM TIP* Exfoliate once a week to make sure you don’t overdo it and irritate your skin or use a handful in the bath to be deeply relaxed and sublimely softened. It’s best not to exfoliate if you’re sunburned. Let the skin heal on its own without an added irritant.

Summer is typically warmer and sunnier than winter. It’s only natural that your skin has different needs. When you’re spending more time in the sun, it’s important to be mindful about sunscreen. Find a broad-spectrum SPF 30 and reapply every 2 hours to protect your skin from premature aging and skin cancer. Try a lightweight moisturiser and go lighter on the makeup, exfoliating no more than once per week. If you want a healthy glow, opt for a self-tanner or tinted moisturiser and powder with SPF. A summer-friendly beauty routine will keep your skin happy and healthy all season long.
